JOSETTE BUSHELL-MINGO


Director, actress and singer Josette Bushell-Mingo is a recipient of the 8th size of the Order of Seraphim for significant contributions in Swedish performing arts. Among other things, she has worked for The Royal Shakespeare Company and been nominated for the Laurence Olivier Prize for her role as Rafiki in the musical production of The Lion King. In 2007 she was awarded the British Empire order - the OBE: Most Excellent Order of the British Empire - for Services to the Arts.

Josette was recently the Artistic Director for Riksteaterns Tyst Teater - sign language theatre department between 2005-2018 and in 2012 she was awarded the Stockholm City Culture Prize, where she received the honorary prize in the category of stage artist. The following year, in 2013, she received the Swedish Association of the Deaf from Sweden.

Nina - A story about me and Nina Simone is a performance about Nina Simone and about Josette Bushell-Mingo, a co-production between The Unity Theater Liverpool and the National Theater toured in both the UK and Sweden and played in Los Angeles.

Josette was most recently working at Riksteatern as the director for the production 24 Hours Black Woman and for A Grape in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, a production that is praised in the Swedish and international press.

Between 2018-2021, Bushell-Mingo worked as the head of Acting at Stockholms University at the Department of Scouting at Stockholm University of the Arts. In August 2021, Josette Bushell-Mingo took over as Principal of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
